May 15th Is Peace Officers Memorial Day, Flags to Fly at Half Staff (Mast) | Veteran Owned Business Observance PSA

Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week is an observance in the United States that pays tribute to the local, state, and Federal peace officers. The Memorial takes place on May 15, and Police Week is the calendar week in which the Memorial falls.

Peace Officers Memorial Day was created on October 1, 1961, when Congress asked the president to designate May 15 to honor peace officers. John F. Kennedy signed the bill into law on October 1, 1962. Amended in 1994, Bill Clinton, through Public Law 103-322, directed that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff on May 15. According to a proclamation by George W. Bush in 2002,

“Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, State, and Federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication. These observances also remind us of the ongoing need to be vigilant against all forms of crime, especially to acts of extreme violence and terrorism.”

Much of the holiday centers on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial wall in Washington, D.C., whose walls feature the names of more than 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Flags are to be flown at half staff on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 (in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day).

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Military Spouse Appreciation Day 2012 Discounts, Freebies, Coupons and More:

A quick note about Military Spouses Day:
Military Spouse Appreciation Day was created by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.  It was Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger who established that the Friday before Mother’s Day be Military Spouses Day. Military Spouse Day was created to honor the spouses of those who serve in our country’s military (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard or Coast Guard).

While as of right now many businesses do not offer special discounts, freebies or coupons specifically for Military Spouse Appreciation Day, it is our goal to get this changed for future Military Spouse Appreciation Day events. Please be careful with any discounts you see specifically for Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Please do your due diligence prior to purchasing anything (especially online).

Famous military quotes by branch (Army, USAF, USMC, USN, USCG) | New Veteran Owned Business feature!

Friday, May 4th, 2012

Veteran Owned Business has added a new section to our military tribute portal!

In celebration of National Military Appreciation Month, we have added a famous military quotes section to our military tribute portal.

Here are some of our favorites from each branch:

“All through your Army careers, you men have bitched about what you call ‘chicken shit drilling’. That, like everything else in this Army, has a definite purpose. That purpose is alertness. Alertness must be bred into every soldier. … You men are veterans or you wouldn’t be here. You are ready for what’s to come.”
General George Smith Patton, Jr.
Check out our full US Army quote section!

“A Marine is a Marine. I set that policy two weeks ago – there’s no such thing as a former Marine. You’re a Marine, just in a different uniform and you’re in a different phase of your life. But you’ll always be a Marine because you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico. There’s no such thing as a former Marine.”
General James F. Amos
Check out our full  US Marine Corps quote section!

“I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: ‘I served in the United States Navy.’”
President John F. Kennedy

Check out our full  US Navy quote section!

“Our warriors are no longer limited to the people who fly the airplanes … Our entire force is a warrior force. Being a warrior is not an AFSC, …it’s a condition of the heart.”
General John P. Jumper

Check out our full  US Air Force quote section!

“Adaptability is a characteristic of the American fighting man that has enabled this country’s Armed Forces to emerge triumphant in every major war we have fought. Adaptability is synonymous with the operations of the United States Coast Guard.”
Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz

Check out our full  US Coast Guard quote section!

“There are some who’ve forgotten why we have a military. It’s not to promote war, it’s to be prepared for peace.”
President Ronald Reagan

Check out our full  general military quote section!
